Nowadays still most of the applications belong to the desktop category. Those are applications installed on your computer/laptop. Main advantages of such applications are their robustness and user comfort.
These advantages are significantly supported by development environments offering very wide range of possible options. In fact, the only disadvantage is necessity of local computer instalation.
However even to this disadvantage there's a solution - in companies, where desktop applications are prefered, mass installation packs are used.
Main reason for using desktop applications is their ability to control external devices - e.g. barcode reader, barcode printer etc.
Kind of an opposite to desktop application are intranet and internet applications.
